The History of WizzAir

Since 2004, Wizz Air, also known as Wizzair or W!zz, has been a dominant presence in the skies of Central and Eastern Europe, connecting 44 countries with passenger transport that reached nearly 35 million individuals in 2019. The Hungarian airline operates a relatively young fleet and a multicultural team and, despite common low-cost issues like limited legroom and delays, Wizz Air continues to increase its passenger numbers year after year thanks to maintaining low prices.

Unfortunately, there are quite a few refund and/or compensation claims that many passengers need to make. This is because delays (over 3 hours on arrival), flight cancellations, lost baggage, and overbooking affect travelers. Of course, this does not happen on every single flight, but with more than 10 destinations in Italy, it is almost normal that Italian passengers are more likely to experience the repercussions of issues with this airline.

WizzAir Refund

What is it and when are you entitled to a WizzAir refund?

A REFUND is the return of the amount paid (primarily the ticket cost) or rebooking on an alternative flight, granted in case of:

  • Flight cancellation
  • Overbooking
  • Flight delayed by more than 5 hours (which is equivalent to a cancellation)
  • Exceptional circumstances for which the airline cannot be held responsible for the disruption and missed departure, such as air traffic control, adverse weather or natural disasters, strikes (other than those by Wizz Air staff), terrorist threats or security issues, airport or runway closures, civil unrest

Following these disruptions, WizzAir will offer the option to:

  • Cancel your booking and request a ticket refund
  • Rebook on the next available flight on the same or similar route. If you choose this option, WizzAir will cover all expenses or refund all documented extra costs, such as additional hotel nights, transport, trips to reach another airport, etc.

WizzAir Compensation

What is it and when are you entitled to WizzAir compensation?

COMPENSATION (also called indemnity or monetary compensation) is unrelated to the ticket price; it is a sum of money owed to the passenger under European Regulation EC 261/2004 to compensate for inconvenience caused by:

How to Request a Refund and Compensation from WizzAir?

It is therefore possible to request a WizzAir refund for a cancelled flight (including those due to extraordinary circumstances for which the airline is not responsible), for a flight delayed by over 5 hours, or for denied boarding due to overbooking. In these cases, the booking holder can initiate the procedure through the WIZZ online profile, or if difficulties arise, they can contact the Wizz Air call center.

However, it often happens that passengers only request a refund, mainly because they are unaware of the conditions under which compensation applies or because they have been told that the cause of the cancellation or delay was due to force majeure. Furthermore, requesting compensation from WizzAir can be challenging and involve long waiting times without any guarantee of receiving the payment. For these reasons, it is always recommended to rely on a team of professionals like Rimborso al Volo, who can assist the passenger by submitting the compensation claim on their behalf and verifying all statements made by the airline regarding any extraordinary circumstances to determine if monetary compensation is actually due.
