The history of Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines: One of the Most Beloved Airlines Among Italians and Internationally Awarded

It’s no coincidence that over 75 million passengers have chosen this airline for their travels. Turkish Airlines connects 319 destinations in more than 125 countries, supported by a team of over 30,000 employees. These impressive numbers have helped the airline excel and win the “Best Airline” award in the E-dreams ranking.

Flying with Turkish is often described as “one of the best experiences in the sky”, thanks to exclusive services that include premium in-flight entertainment, the latest movie releases, music, games, and onboard Wi-Fi across their entire fleet.

With millions of passengers and one of the largest global air networks, Turkish Airlines has built a worldwide success story. Unfortunately, delays, cancellations, overbookings, or lost luggage can still occasionally occur.

How to claim compensation from Turkish Airlines in case of flight cancellation, delay of more than 3 hours, or overbooking

If your flight has been cancelled, arrived with a delay of at least 180 minutes, or you were denied boarding due to overbooking, you are entitled to compensation based on the distance between the departure and arrival airports, specifically:

  • €250.00 for all routes equal to or less than 1,500 km
  • €400.00 for routes between 1,500 km and 3,500 km
  • €600.00 for routes over 3,500 km

Let’s now look in detail at the different scenarios and explain how to proceed if:

  • Turkish Airlines has cancelled your flight
  • Turkish Airlines caused you to arrive at your destination with a delay of 3 hours or more
  • Turkish Airlines denied you boarding due to overbooking

What does the Passenger Rights Bill say in case of flight cancellation by Turkish Airlines?

Following the cancellation of your Turkish Airlines flight, the airline is required to provide you with monetary compensation, as established by the Passenger Rights Charter — a practical guide summarised by ENAC for air travelers.

As mentioned, the amount of compensation depends on the distance between the departure and arrival airports, specifically:

  • €250.00 for all routes up to 1,500 km
  • €400.00 for routes between 1,500 and 3,500 km
  • €600.00 for routes over 3,500 km

This compensation applies if Turkish Airlines did not notify you at least 14 days in advance or failed to offer an alternative flight within 7 days of departure.

As stated in European Regulation No. 261/2004, Turkish Airlines is not liable if the cancellation was due to air traffic control strikes, adverse weather conditions, health emergencies, political instability, or safety risks on the ground and/or in flight. In such cases, Turkish Airlines is not required to compensate passengers for the inconvenience.

And if you’re placed in a lower class than the one you originally booked and paid for, are you entitled to a refund?

Good news in this case too! If you are placed in a lower travel class than the one stated on your ticket, you are entitled to claim compensation based on the following scale:

  • 30% of the ticket price for flights up to 1,500 km
  • 50% of the ticket price for flights over 1,500 km within the European Union
  • 50% of the ticket price for all other flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km
  • 75% of the ticket price for flights outside the European Union over 3,500 km

What does the Passenger Rights Charter say in the event of denied boarding due to overbooking by Turkish Airlines?

In this case as well, European Regulation No. 261/2004 states that you are entitled to receive compensation!

The rules are the same as in the case of flight cancellations or delays of at least 3 hours.

If you are denied boarding due to overbooking, you are entitled to:

  •     A refund of the ticket for the flight you were denied boarding on;
  •     A refund of the fare difference for another flight you purchase, in case you choose not to be rebooked by Turkish Airlines (or if Turkish Airlines is unable to rebook you);
  •     Reimbursement of any additional expenses if the rebooking or new flight is scheduled for a later date than the original one;
  •     Compensation of €250 for routes under 1,500 km, €400 for routes between 1,500 and 3,500 km, and €600 for routes over 3,500 km.

Be careful not to confuse a refund with compensation!

Let’s look at the differences:

  • REFUND is granted in the event of a flight cancellation only when the airline does not rebook you on an alternative flight. So, you are entitled to a refund if you do not physically board the plane, whether due to a cancellation or overbooking. You are also entitled to a REFUND for any additional expenses you incurred due to the cancellation, such as meals or hotel accommodation. A REFUND is also due in cases of exceptional circumstances, meaning situations where the airline is not considered responsible for the disruption, such as adverse weather conditions, strikes, or health emergencies.
  • COMPENSATION (or indemnity or monetary compensation) is unrelated to the ticket price. It is a fixed amount of money owed to you for the inconvenience caused by a flight cancellation, delay, or overbooking, as established by the Montreal Convention of 2001. You are NOT entitled to COMPENSATION if the disruption was caused by exceptional circumstances or if you were notified of the cancellation at least 14 days in advance. This compensation is meant to cover the inconvenience caused by the airline’s inefficiency, entirely independent of the cost of your ticket.

Many passengers only request a REFUND because they’re unaware that they’re also entitled to COMPENSATION — or they’ve been told that the cancellation or delay was due to force majeure.

At rimborsoalvolo.it, we thoroughly verify the airline’s claims about any exceptional circumstances to determine whether you’re also entitled to monetary compensation!
