Airline Information

An unpleasant situation worth understanding in detail

Getting a refund for your trip can quickly turn into a nightmare!

Choosing the right airline for your needs is the first step to enjoying your trip or holiday with peace of mind. Airlines differ based on the services they offer, the routes they cover, and how they handle customer service. Over time, all of these aspects have improved, but there are still significant differences between carriers, which can generally be divided into three main categories. It’s important to remember that, although the rules for airline compensation are standard across the European Union and apply to every carrier, some variations in behavior still remain.

Flag carriers

These are the largest and most important airlines, typically operating long-haul routes. They usually offer higher quality services and do not charge additional fees for standard amenities. Generally, they do not pose major issues when it comes to refunds and compensation, although they may experience overbooking problems, delays at major airports, and baggage mishandling. An example of a flag carrier is Air France-KLM.

Low-cost airlines

The low-cost airline market expanded significantly in the late 1990s, when major deregulation allowed many carriers to become independent and offer low fares. During the second half of the 2000s, partly due to the economic crisis, many of these airlines were restructured or ceased operations. The speed of compensation processing varies by airline, but they usually do not face overbooking issues. However, they are sometimes subject to delays and cancellations, particularly those experiencing financial difficulties. A classic example is Ryanair.

Regional airlines

In the past, regional airlines were much more numerous. Today, they struggle significantly due to competition from low-cost carriers, and in some cases, they have adopted that same business model. They usually operate secondary routes, which can sometimes lead to delays or cancellations. However, these are not always under the airline’s control, so it’s always best to check the reason for the cancellation.

The Italian example is Meridiana.
