How to claim your refund and compensation from Aer Lingus

Have you had an Aer Lingus flight cancelled, delayed or overbooked?
In many cases you can get a refund or financial compensation of up to € 600, as required by the European Regulation EC 261/2004.

In this guide you will find all the necessary information: rights, amounts, timing and application methods, so as to obtain what you are entitled to easily and without initial costs.

The history of Aer Lingus

Founded on 15 April 1936 by the Irish government, Aer Lingus is the flag carrier of Ireland and one of the oldest airlines in Europe.
Its first flight, on 27 May 1936, connected Dublin and Bristol. In the 1950s, it launched transatlantic routes between Shannon and New York, becoming a stable link between Europe and North America.

In 1960 it entered the jet era with Boeing 720s, followed by 737s for European routes and 747s for intercontinental connections from 1970.
Since 1990, the fleet has modernized with Airbus A320 and A330, a symbol of the company’s expansion and sustainability.

Today, Aer Lingus connects Ireland to dozens of cities in Europe, North America and the UK, with main hubs in Dublin (DUB) and Cork (ORK), and is part of the International Airlines Group (IAG), along with British Airways, Iberia and Vueling.

Aer Lingus Reimbursement and Compensation: Differences and Cases

Before filing a claim, it is essential to distinguish between reimbursement and compensation.

Ticket Refund

You are entitled to a full refund when:

  • The flight is cancelled and you do not accept rerouting;

  • You give up your flight after a delay of more than 5 hours;

  • You have been denied boarding due to overbooking and do not want to travel on the alternative flight;

  • Aer Lingus is unable to provide equivalent carriage within a reasonable timeframe.

The refund covers the full ticket price and airport taxes. It is generally credited within 7 working days.

Compensation or indemnification

Compensation is a lump sum compensation established by EC Regulation 261/2004.
It does not depend on the cost of the ticket but on the distance of the flight and the responsibility of the company.
It applies when:

  • Cancellation is communicated with less than 14 days notice;

  • The flight arrives more than 3 hours late;

  • You have been denied boarding against your will;

  • You missed your connection due to a delay of the first flight in the same booking.

It is not due if the discomfort comes from exceptional circumstances, such as extreme weather conditions, ATC restrictions or health emergencies.

Aer Lingus compensation: What is it and when are you eligible?

According to EC Regulation 261/2004, the passenger is entitled to an indemnity between €250 and €600 in the following cases:

  • Flight cancelled without minimum notice of 14 days;

  • Delay on arrival equal to or greater than 3 hours;

  • Overbooking with denied boarding;

  • Missed connection due to a delay of a previous flight.

Expected amounts

  • €250 for routes up to 1,500 km;

  • €400 for intra-EU flights of more than 1 500 km or domestic flights between 1 500 and 3 500 km;

  • €600 for flights over 3,500 km.

If the delay in arrival is between 3 and 4 hours on routes over 3 500 km, the company can reduce the compensation by 50%.

Other rights

Aer Lingus must provide free assistance: meals, drinks, two communications (phone calls or emails), any accommodation and transport to/from the airport if the wait is extended.
